About Balfolk

Balfolk is a great way to reconnect with people in our isolated daily life. It is a family of traditional dances from France and other western European countries, that are danced socially today by enthusiasts all over Europe, mostly to live music. These dances range across a variety of forms, from circle dances to closed couple dances (like waltz), going through short chains or contradances, can be enjoyed by everybody, regardless of age or gender, and are accessible to a wide range of abilities.

The balfolk movement started in the 1970s when some young people from France noticed that their elders knew music and dances that were no longer being played or danced, and that this knowledge was dying. They started interviewing them, learning and practicing their dances and music. This enterprise has been continued ever since, and the most enthusiastic bands still return to previous generations to learn their music.

I started dancing in 2005, and travelled to Brittany every year to dance. When I discovered that my town had a balfolk scene I quickly integrated into it, and started teaching in 2011. I have taught more and more regularly since then, locally and in other cities, and held a teachers’ training event in western Switzerland in the winter of 2014-2015.
